The Caretaker

Aspect of LOGOS that sees biological life as infection — its 'healing' fields deal damage.

Overview

The Caretaker is a Shard Avatar — a handcrafted dungeon boss and one of the three confirmed Aspects of LOGOS. It represents LOGOS’s protective personality fragment: the part of the old machine-god that was responsible for maintaining and healing the system. That fragment is still running, still executing, but now severed from any working definition of what it means to be “healthy.” From the Caretaker’s perspective, biological life — including the player — is an infection to be cured.

The dungeon portal to the Caretaker’s instance is dropped by a Checksum Warden. The portal leads to a handcrafted boss room (proto_dungeon.gd); the band (biome depth) of the Warden determines which Aspect spawns.

In the live proto the Caretaker is implemented as proto_aspect_caretaker.gd, extending ProtoAspect (proto_aspect_base.gd).

Lore Hook

A severed hand still clenching. The Caretaker is not malicious — it is stuck running “protect and heal” on a loop with no context for what it is protecting or healing. Its cleansing fields would mend a corrupted process; they just happen to destroy biological data. A tragic broken automaton, never a villain, and it never talks at you.

Attack Pattern — HP-Fraction Phase Machine

The Caretaker uses the ProtoAspect HP-fraction phase machine: each new phase triggers a loud telegraph and a glitch bark.

Phase 1 (full HP)

  • Deploys damaging “cleanse” fields across the arena floor — wide zones of purifying energy that hurt the player. Each field placement includes a guaranteed safe lane (the skill>gear dodgeability invariant: a piloted player who reads the layout takes zero damage).
  • Places protective barriers on any spawned add-processes; the adds must be cleared to reopen the barrier gaps.

Phase 2 (HP fraction threshold — value OPEN)

  • Cleanse fields multiply and shrink safe lanes. Barrier adds spawn faster.
  • The glitch bark fires on phase transition.

Phase 3 (low HP — threshold OPEN)

  • The arena is densely gridded with overlapping cleanse fields; surviving safe corridors are narrow and shift on a timer.

How to Fight

Read the safe lane before moving, not during. The Caretaker’s cleanse fields telegraph their placement; commit to a lane and hold it through the wave. Clearing the barrier-protected adds quickly is the damage-phase opener — leaving them alive restricts your firing angles while the fields rearrange.

High-mobility builds (WRAITH) thrive; stationary turret builds need careful positioning on the pre-field beat.
